An Exciting Math Contest for 4th and 5th Grades

Contest Support provided by UT Tyler School of Education & Psychology
Mathletics encourages math skills and critical thinking in a two-round competition format. The contest for 4th and 5th Grade students combines a written test format which identifies the top math students with a cooperative, hands-on team round for the top 10 teams.
Each school or group may register up to two teams of six members. The six students must be equally divided between 4th and 5th grades. Teams should also be a mix of boys and girls. All students take the preliminary written test in the morning of the contest. The written test determines the Top 10 Teams for the Final round and the high scoring individual awards.
The Final round occurs in the afternoon and is open to other schools and family members to watch. Team members from the top 10 schools work through a series of short and long problems. Many are above grade level for the students and some require the use of manipulatives and creative problem-solving to complete.
Sample problems are available to assist in coaching the teams. These problems are samples of the types of problems that may be encountered in the written test. Problems in the Final round may be similar to some of these, but some will use logic skills, charts, and various manipulatives which will be supplied for the students' use.
  • Students from teams which do not place receive a
    participation certificate.
  • 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places are awarded in each level.
  • Members of placing teams receive a place ribbon and the team receives a trophy. Each member of a placing team receives a cash award of $25.00, $15.00 or $10.00.
  • 1st, 2nd, and 3rd High Scoring Individuals receive medallions and a cash award of $25.00, $15.00, or $10.00.
