Tie-Down Roping

Presented by Ben Fitzgerald Real Estate Services LLC

Tie-down roping is a timed rodeo event where the contestant and horse work together to catch and tie a calf as quickly as possible. The event begins when the calf is released from the chute and given a head start. As the rider and horse charge forward, the clock starts when they cross the score line.

The contestant must rope the calf, dismount the horse, run down the rope, and quickly tie any three of the calf’s legs together with a small rope called a piggin’ string. Meanwhile, the horse must stop and hold the rope tight to keep the calf still.

The run is completed when the contestant throws up their hands to signal they’re finished. The calf must stay tied for six seconds after the rope slackens, or the run is disqualified.

Tie-down roping showcases the rider’s roping skill, speed, and athletic ability, while also demonstrating the horse’s training, discipline, and partnership with the contestant.
