Contest Rules
(Revised July 2008)
- Junior
Buying Ages 8-13
- Senior Buying Ages 14-19
- Junior Construction
Ages 8-13
- Senior Construction Ages 14-19
Category descriptions:
- Casual - Garment should be
suitable for school and casual after school activities,
such as spectator sports, picnics, and casual dates.
Examples are pants, jeans, skirt, or shorts each with
a top, jumpsuit, casual or sporty dresses, skirt or
pants with casual/sporty jacket, school coat, and coordinated
separates.
- Dressy - Garments suitable
for dressy activities such as dinner dates, theater,
banquets, and job/scholarship interviews. Examples are
men's and women's suits, dressy dresses, and dressy
coats.
- Formal - Limited to garments
worn for formal evening events and formal weddings.
This category includes tuxedos, formal gowns, wedding
dresses and bridesmaids' dresses. Garments in this category
should not be suitable for ordinary daily activities.
- Specialty - Limited to athletic
and special purpose garments. Examples are band, pep
squad, and cheerleader uniforms; athletic garments such
as jobbing suits, swimsuits, leotards and ski-wear;
sleep wear; and theatrical and circus-type costumes
such as clown suits and ballet costumes. Garments in
this category should not be suitable for ordinary daily
activities.
- Registration forms are submitted to the East Texas State Fair Office. FCCLA groups from registered schools do not need to submit an additional School/Group Registration if the school has indicated participation in Youth Fashion Show on the registration form.
- Worksheets must be submitted
to the Smith County office of the Texas Cooperative Extension
by 4:00 p.m. on the designated deadline. Note that a picture
of the garment no larger than 4 x 6 is required with the
worksheet. Garments are not required to be submitted prior
to the Fashion Show.
- Judging: Each participant's entry in the
Junior or Senior Construction will be judged on completed
Construction Division worksheet prior to the fashion
show and on fit and modeling presentation at the FASHION
SHOW. Each participant's entry in the Junior or Senior
Smart Buying will be judged on completed Buying Division
Worksheet prior to the fashion show and on fit and
modeling presentation at the FASHION SHOW.
- Contestant's Arrival: All contestants
must arrive at the Fashion Show location by the set arrival
time and will be deleted from the fashion show list if not
present at that time. DO NOT BE LATE.
- No item will be accepted for competition that is distasteful, suggestive, offensive or controversial. USE GOOD TASTE!!
- Any article may be entered that was bought or constructed during a one year period prior to the Academic Rodeo, but not previously entered in the Youth Fashion Show.
- Each exhibitor is permitted only ONE entry
in the Fashion Show.
- Exhibitors must select, buy or construct
his or her own garment.
- 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will
be selected in each specialty category .
Overall 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will be designated
in the two primary categories in each age level.
- The category you enter will not be changed after your entry is received. Choose carefully!! No changes will be accepted.
Youth Fashion Show Contest Timeline

- Primary Contact for school or organization will submit the School/Organization
Registration Form by the deadline.

- Sponsor will select participants for the contest.
- Sponsor will register students selected for Youth Fashion Show using the Student
Registration Form by the designated deadline. This may be coordinated with sponsors of other contests.
- Students should submit the appropriate worksheet (Youth
Fashion Show Construction Worksheet or Youth
Fashion Show Smart Buying Worksheet) by the
designated deadline.
- Students will model garments in a fashion show for final
judging of their selections.
- Photographs of entries will be on
display during the Academic Rodeo.
- Overall category winners will be recognized at the Academic
Rodeo Awards Celebration. Students and/or school sponsors should
attend to accept awards for the school or organization.
- Photographs of entries will be on
display during the East Texas State Fair.
