Academic Rodeo - Computer Science Fair - Desktop Publishing
“Promoting excellence in education and showcasing the talents of all our youth.”

This category is open to students in elementary (grades 3-5) and middle school (grades 6-8). 

Rules:

To be updated by end of July 2008

  1. All documents are to be 100% created by the submitting student.
  2. Student's name & school must be placed on the back of the document using an adhesive label. Do NOT include a disk of the project.
  3. The content or theme of the document is open to any appropriate subject related to the school curriculum.
  4. Elementary students only may use a template or "wizard."
  5. Documentation - Each entry must include a brief (not more than one page), typewritten paper describing the development of the project. The paper must explain the purpose of the project and describe the intended audience . It must list all of the hardware (include exact computer name and type, scanners, cameras, etc.) and software (include all version numbers, i.e. PageMaker 6.5). The student will provide credit for all non-original materials such as clip art, photos, and any other resources. Documentation should also include verification of the student's work by the teacher/sponsor. Failure to provide the above information will result in disqualification.

Categories:

Student projects may be in any one of the following categories:

  1. Brochure/Pamphlet - describes an organization or service providing information about what it does or products that are offered. Must be one page, double sided, 8 ½ X 11. Color ink/toner may be used, while paper may only be one color.
  2. Newsletter - carries information to groups of people with special interest in common. Must be one page, double sided, and 8 1/2 x 11. Color ink/toner may be used, while paper may only be one color .
  3. Business Document - may include such things as customized letterhead stationery, business card design, logo design, or graphic design for product packaging. Must be one page, single sided, on 8 ½ x 11 paper. Business cards, logos, or product packaging design may be smaller than 8 1/2 x 11. Color ink/toner may be used, while paper may only be one color .
  4. Flyer - may be used to invite, recruit, notify, or announce an event or activity, etc. Must be one page, single sided, 8 1/2 x 11. Color ink/toner may be used, while paper may only be one color.
  5. Advertisement - may be used to promote a product or for the adoption of an idea or issue. May promote a real or creatively designed product or service. May resemble an ad layout for a magazine or newspaper publication. Must be one page, single sided, 8 ½ x 11 . Color ink/toner may be used while paper may be only one color.

Students need not be present during the Desktop Publishing judging.

Computer Science Fair Contest Timeline

(See Academic Rodeo Timeline for specific dates and deadlines.)

  • Sponsors should check with the Primary School Contact to see that the School/Organization Registration Form has been submitted for the school. See the Academic Rodeo Timeline for specific deadline.
  • Select 3 entries in each category from each contest level (elementary, middle school or high school) of the school to submit for the contest.
  • Contest sponsor should coordinate with other contest sponsors to register the students selected for the contest using the Student Registration Form by the designated deadline.
  • Submit entries to the East Texas State Fair office at 2112 W. Front Street by the deadline.
  • All students, except Desktop Publishing participants, attend the Computer Science Fair Contest for judging of their entries.
  • The Academic Rodeo Timeline will indicate the date when winners will be announced.
  • Computer Science Fair entries and/or results will be on display throughout the Academic Rodeo.
  • Students submitting winning entries will be recognized at the Academic Rodeo Awards Program. Students and/or school sponsors should attend to accept awards for the school.
  • Desktop Publishing entries will be stored at the fair office to be displayed again during the East Texas State Fair.
  • Projects submitted on CD will be returned to schools at the conclusion of the Academic Rodeo.  Recognition of the project work will be included in any Academic Rodeo display.  When possible, these projects will be displayed in a slide show presentation during the Academic Rodeo and the East Texas State Fair.
  • Following the East Texas State Fair, students or sponsors should collect entries during the designated pick-up time period. Items not collected will become the property of the East Texas State Fair and will be destroyed.
