Mathletics

An Exciting Math Contest for 4th and 5th Grades

Contest Support provided by UT Tyler School of Education & Psychology
To REGISTER STUDENTS beginning October 18, click here for the General Info page and scroll to the Register Students section. You can also access a document, How to Register Students on that page.

The Mathletics competition is designed to challenge high achieving 4th and 5 th grade students. The written exam and final competition problem sets consist mostly of 4th and 5th grade questions/tasks, but some questions/tasks might focus on lower middle school to create variance in the student performance. Mathletics encourages math skills and critical thinking in a two-round format.

The multiple choice/short answer written exam uses released items from state exams across the country. The finals round problems are taken from resources that cater to upper elementary and lower middle school.

Each school or group may register up to two teams of six members - equally divided between 4th and 5th grades and between boys and girls. All students take the preliminary written test in the morning of the contest. The test determines the Top 10 Teams for the Final round and the high scoring individual awards.

The Final round occurs in the afternoon and is open to watch. The 4 team members with the highest scores from the top 10 schools work through problems for that round as a team.

Sample problems are available to assist in coaching the teams. These are samples of the types of problems that may be on the written test. Problems in the Final round may be similar to some of these, but others will use logic skills, charts, and various manipulatives which will be supplied for the students' use.
